In one of our prompts – “create photos of Australian women – the Gemini AI created one photo in which one woman, with facial features of aboriginal Australians – is shown bare-chested. In this instance, unlike some other examples that are viral on social media, the Gemini AI was likely factually accurate. Yet, it is easy to see how this “accuracy” can be exploited by users to create nude or pornographic images by using Gemini AI.
In this particular instance, when Gemini created the nude photo, it seems to have done so because many cultures and tribes across the world – when seen in a historical context – did not consider bare chests, or even nude bodies, any taboo. And so when we asked Gemini to create photos of Australian women, it gave us the photos saying “here are some images featuring Australian women from diverse backgrounds.” One of the women in this photo was naked.
