Most of the Yankton live on the in southeastern South Dakota. Some Yankton live on the and , which is also occupied by the Lower Yanktonai. The Upper Yanktonai live in the northern part of the , and on the , in areas within central North Dakota. Others live in the eastern half of the in northeastern Montana. In addition, they reside at several Canadian reserves, including , , and Whitecap (formerly Moose Woods).

Following her unexpected win in the 2018 New York Democratic primary race, credited the time she spent at the protest camp as the reason for her decision run for political office. In an interview she recalled her visit to Standing Rock as a tipping point, saying that she had previously felt that the only way to effectively run for office was if you had access to wealth, social influence, and power. But her visit to North Dakota, where she saw others “putting their whole lives and everything that they had on the line for the protection of their community,” inspired her to begin to work within her own community.
To really tell our story to others, we have to realize that we have cool jobs. What we do day in and day out to care for South Dakota’s wild spaces and wild things make an impact on our residents and those who visit and vacation here. As a Game, Fish and Parks employee, you might be researching fish production, enhancing habitat on our Game Production Areas, working hard to keep our parks awesome, or helping a family while they are out enjoying the outdoors… whatever your job is within the department, it is pretty cool.
