Visions Volume 1 is, as anthologies are wont to be, a mixed bag, featuring a wide range of animation styles and approaches to the main text of Star Wars. The only common thread is a fascination with the lightsabre and sword duels, which is not uncommon in Star Wars media of any kind. Of them all, ‘Tatooine Rhapsody’ stands out as barely containing a lightsabre and featuring no duels, but even then the central character is a former padawan and Order 66 survivor.
Overall, I think that Visions shows that Star Wars can afford to be a broad church. Freed from any expectations of canon, what is effectively authorised fanfiction can explore minor themes and a variety of different views on the Force. For the centre of the fictional universe, the Force has always been either vaguely or inconsistently defined, and here we see it in the martial arts of Sith and Jedi, in art and music, in interpersonal relationships, and even in the mundane skills of plucky, claymation civilians. Yet while each film has a very distinct feel and look, they all display a great love for their common source material, diving deep into obscure lore, or simply filling out their visual space with classic alien species.
