Savage Miracle kept me turning pages to find out what would happen next. It is a well written, smooth flowing book that made the characters come alive via the author’s description of the town of Mineola and its mysterious, ordinary, extraordinary residents. It was easy to put a face to characters see how they lived, hear their interaction with one another via expressive dialogue. The book left me wanting to know more about this place and its people.
Doc Savage: The Miracle Menace by Robeson, Kenneth, Dent, Lester, Murray, Will (2013) Paperback
Well, finished up Doc Savage: The Mracle Menace last night. Not my favourite. After the incredible roller-coaster ride that was Skull Island, it didn’t reach those heights.MIracle Menace seemed a bit overlong and slow going. Comes in at 400 pages and could have done with editing down by about 100. The bits with Doc were good, if a little bit too much sci-fi, but I started skim-reading through the chapters with the supporting characters about halfway through. Lester Dent managed to keep up a fast pace by limiting the length of the pulp stories. I just don’t understand why most modern books have to come in at about 400 pages.Interesting use of the news clipping agency and crime college and a new dirigible. Nice to see the return of an old foe, but a little disappointed in the way he came across. Could have been a set up for an epic showdown.Looks like ‘The Phantom Lagoon’ is up next. I have high hopes for that.
